Oh, I have had this problem numerous times. Best way to do this, is to get everything out first. Just make sure the closet is totally empty. Then go through your shoes. Do these fit you? Do these have holes? These are out of style! Same thing for your sweatshirts, too. Then, you can give them to goodwill, or sell the ones in good condition. That way you make some money out of it. Make labels! Label which drawer has socks, pajamas, etc.
There is something called "Space Bags". This is an item where you put the desired items into the bag, grab a vacuum, and make it air tight. It makes the clothing, like, 10 times smaller, also, they are waterproof and dirt proof etc.
The only problem with those is you have to reseal them every time you get something out of it.

Just a tip, clean out and make sure everything is in place every Saturday. It really does help.
      Best of luck!

Lots of great options available at Home Depot and Lowes and you can buy only the components you need. Get rid of anything and everything that doesn’t fit, is damanged beyond repair. Anything you don’t want that is still servicable can be donated to charity. As for organizing, I cannot say enough about hanging clothes by color. My husband resisted the idea but after I did that to his closet he is amazed at how easy it is to find stuff. It takes a few more minutes to put clothes away but it’s SO EASY when you’re in the mood to wear a blue shirt and all you have to do is go to the "blue" section.

      1. Get rid of everything that you no longer want/need/fits/is in good condition. Throw trash away and put donations in bags.

      2. Sort what’s left into categories so you can see how much you have (purses, shoes, sweatshirts, etc.)

      3. Store your things using organizational products (check out the sites below).
